MISSING AS OF 07/21/07
Damariscove Island is one of Maine and the nation's earliest settlement sites and a National Historic Landmark. As early as 1600, long before colonists arrived at Jamestown or Plymouth, fishermen from Europe found success in the waters around the island, making Damariscove an early and important commercial seaport. The island's long, narrow harbor sheltered many ships plying this new trade route. But long before that Abnaki tribe members came to the island to fish and collect eggs.
The island can be reached by private boat. Courtesy moorings and dinghies are available.
Walk from the dock to the Museum. Learn about life on the island. Go out the door and turn to your left. On the backside of the building is a bulletin board with info on plants and animals on the island, look down at the two rocks at your feet, check under left rock.(this is a micro box, journal at box #2)
Follow the Tower trail to the Tower. Enjoy the incredible views. Walk aroud to the entrance. While looking at the door look down to your right. PLEASE rehide well.
