This box was originally made for the Ice Scream Sunday Event in April, 2006.

CARVER: White Otter
PLACER: Team Randalstik
DIFFICULTY: Easy, well . . . maybe tricky. Basically I'm leading you to a rocky shore of gray boulders and telling you, "look behind the rock". BAAHAHAHAHA. good luck . . .
TERRAIN: A rocky shore. Minimal walk down boulders . . . if you are right on.
TIME: 30 minutes.
EQUIPMENT: Compass. All readings magnetic north.
STAMP: Hand carved by WHITE OTTER

LOCATION: Salem Willows Park, 158 Fort Avenue.

The 35-acre waterfront site, once home to a contagious disease hospital, was designated a city park in 1858 and is named for the original white willow trees that were planted around 1800. Sadly, none of the original willows exist. But the functioning, small arcade still exists.

There are several little stands to buy carnival food (ie. fried dough, slush, pizza, hot dogs, etc.) including ice cream. But before I get into that, there is a stand called Salem Lowes Chinese Food. They sell "the world famous" Chop Suey Sandwich. Never had it before since I'm a veghead, but people say it's good. It's certainly unique.

Now back to the ice cream . . . so there are several places for ice cream here but the reason why this box is planted here is for Hobbs Homemade Ice cream at the very end of the Willows.

Everett Hobbs and Wilbur Eaton first began selling popcorn and other products at the Willows in the mid-1880's at a concession in the pavilion. In 1897 the partners founded the National Popcorn Company and opened a plant in Lynn on Western Avenue.

At that same time, the men acquired the aforementioned carousel building at the Willows. They sold popcorn, taffy, and other summer delights. In 1906, they introduced a new product -- the ice cream cone -- to the American public.

Their ice cream is good and their popcorn is really good but I think I could feel my arteries thickening as I ate it, never mind the strange orange color my fingertips got after a few . . . alright . . . several handfuls of the stuff. Yumm. Popcorn and ice cream.

WELL, OFF TO THE BOX . . .

Go towards the water past Hobbs' stand. Towards your left is the Salem Willows Pier. Go South East (that would be your right) along the wall towards the grassy knoll overlooking the ocean.

Standing in the center of the octogon, walk to the edge of the grassy knoll 65 degrees.

Want to double check your position?
Go to the bush (if it's summer) in the North corner of the grassy knoll and walk along it's edge 11 single steps. You should be at the same spot.

Take three steps off the grassy knoll and down into the rocks. You should now be on a 6 foot by 5 foot fairly level, flat boulder with white veins running through it. Turn around to face away from the ocean.

You should be looking at a large gray boulder with a white granite patch on its left side at its rear. On top of this gray boulder, is another large flatish gray rock that hangs off the grassy knoll creating a little rock cave. Look in there behind the rocks in there.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of rehinding this box well. Walk around the spot to be sure you cannot see any part of the burlap bag or STRING. From the rocks and from above on the grassy knoll. This seems to be a nasty little hangout by teens during the night.

Hope you try some of the ice cream and popcorn and enjoy it.
