25 miles from Charlotte take Highway 74 East exit from I-85. The exit is west of Gastonia and past the Bessemer City exit. 1.5 miles from I-85 watch for brown signs on the right. Turn right and follow the signs. Linwood Road, the location of the Backside Trail parking lot is the first left. The main park entrance and picnic area is straight ahead. Follow the signs to the Park Office and the main parking area of Crowder's Mountain State Park. (NOTE: There are two entrances to this park. You want the “Linwood Road Access” entrance.)
Hike = Strenuous. Allow 60 min. for the entire loop. Approx. 1 mile. Probably not suitable for young children. Trail is paved with crushed granite, then a steep stretch of stairs up to the rocky mountain top. The view at the top is fantastic and worth the trip. A compas would be helpful.
Park in the Linwood Road Access lot. Take a look at the trail map before departing. Restrooms and small picnic area available off the parking lot.
•From the parking lot, head down the trail toward the mountain from the picnic area and then make a R up the trail.
•At the first fork, make a R onto the “Backside Trail.” (Orange blaze trail marker.)
•Hike uphill. Pass a wooden bench on the R.
•Keep up the trail. You will start to see the cliff face on your L.
•Reach a long flight of wood beam steps. (I counted 326 of them. See what # you come up with. It might take your mind off the climb!)
•When you reach the summit you will be greeted by a sign post and a trash can. Keep walking a few yards to the SW.
•Locate a bronze memorial marker to “Richard R. Cone.” Face the marker and look up. Richard will point the way.
•Take 30-35 steps to the SE, toward the rocks.
•Look under a rock outcropping with a spiny vine growing on top and you will find your prize.
•When you are done, climb the rocks in front of you and enjoy the vista. (Be careful though … this is a cliff!)
