7/25/09 Report of, box just fine.

I went totally tourist this last weekend but managed to plant my first California box. We visited the Redwoods and enjoyed every moment of 75* weather while my hometown in Oregon baked in 105* heat...

This is a fly-by box. 5 minute find.

In the Jedediah Smith State Park, you need to find the Amelia Earhart Memorial Grove sign: From Hwy 101, head east on 199 for 1 mile past the Jedediah Smith sign, to the Amelia Earhart sign on your left. Coming from the east (Hiouchi), watch for the Simpson Reed Grove and it's a short ways past it, on your right.

Stand facing the Amelia Earhart sign, head 45* (right) about 11 steps. Take a sharp L, go between the young tree and the 3' cut downed log. Follow downhill. The trail bottoms out and continues to the left, over a small log, and a larger one. From here count 11 steps uphill to a pointed stump with a cave. A couple feet to the left is a smooth root with rotting wood underneath it. Look underneath the root.

Please re-cover well. This box is orphaned! I'm sure I won't be back for a while so any maintenance is greatly appreciated. It is well-baggied so it should be OK for quite some time, if re-hidden well. Enjoy! The Redwoods truly are spectacular.
