Replaced 10/13/2008
Difficulty: Easy but not stroller friendly. About 30 – 45 minutes.
Note: Poison ivy in the area
Clues:
Take Route 30 into Shabbona and follow the signs to Chief Shabbona’s historical marker/forest preserve. Once there, park by the shelter nearest the merry-go-round and take the road into the woods. Shortly you will see a trail marked orange leading to the right, follow that trail until it comes to a clearing. To your left you will see an oval surrounded by wooden posts, in the middle is a kiosk that has Chief Shabbona’s life history. It is very interesting reading. After you have read it, what kind of a man do you think the Chief was? To continue to the box, return to the clearing and at the entrance look to the left at 180 degrees. Walk across the clearing in that direction to a tiny trail leading into the woods. There is a rock on the left just at the entrance to the trail, walk 27 steps from that rock into the woods. Look to your right to an obvious corner and you will see ahead of you where a giant warrior fell, walk to that corner. From the corner, walk 9 steps toward the fallen giant that is being held by his comrades. Wedged about 5 feet up, where these warriors embrace,is where you will find information that will help you fill in the blank to the following statement:
