********** November 14, 2006: a handcarved stamp now
replaces the store-bought stamp **********

This is my first plant and contains only a store-bought stamp. The Dells is a conservation area in the middle of a small town called Littleton. There is a trail that loops the small pond that is here. I used to fish that pond as a kid and caught a nice 24" brown trout here. That big fish was everything a 13 yr. dreamed about and more. This letterbox is dedicated to such good childhood memories that simple things like fishing and being in the great outdoors can provide.
There are many ways to approach this one. There is parking off the Dells Rd and off Rt 18/West Main st across
the street from A Notch Above used car lot. The quickest and most direct route is to take the trail(south end of the pond) on the Dells Rd. side and head east on the trail for a short hike on level terrain. You will notice that the trail starts a loop to the left just before the cemetery. Looking to your right, you should see an iron rod sticking out of the ground with a florescent ribbon on it. To the right of that is an iron gate blocking a trail and just beyond that in your view should be large boulder. Your prize is underneath the boulder in back. If you are starting from the parking off West Main St, you may want to take the Dells Short cut down over a set of stairs and over a wooden bridge and up on the primary trail where everything will be on your right as you head east. If you decide not to and follow the trail to the left, then the iron pin, the gate and the boulder will eventually, of course, be on your left. However, I don't think there is another boulder in the park so you shouldn't have any trouble. Look for the nature trail that is here if you like. It goes thru the woods connecting back into the loop. The whole hike shouldn't take more than a half hour.
