Box is currently out for repairs.

From I-70, take Hwy 19 south to Hermann. Drive over the Missouri River Bridge and into Hermann. You are on Market St. Continue on Market St. until you get to the 4 way stop. Turn right at the 4 way. You are now on West 4th. Drive up the hill and stop at St. George Catholic Church. The church is open every day so go in and look at the beautiful stained glass windows. There is even a booklet in the back of church that explains the history of the windows.
When you leave the church, be sure and take a look at the beautiful view, then drive back down 4th St. and turn right on Market St. Continue driving south through Hermann until you reach Hwy H, on your left. It is less than a mile through town to Hwy H. When you reach H, turn left and drive up Hwy H for approximatel 1/2 mile. You will see Bayer Rd. on your left. Bayer Rd. is named for George Bayer, the founder of Hermann.
Turn left on Bayer (it is the only way you can turn). OK, now is the tricky part. Do not drive more than a car lenght on Bayer Rd. or you have gone too far. On your right is an asphalt road. Turn down this little road. Don't worry, it is not private property yet.
Drive down the road 75 feet and park in the dirt on your right. You are now at the old Catholic Cemetery. So where are all the tombstones? Well, long ago this cemetery became filled and the church started a newer cemetery. That Catholic Cemetery is located west of St. George. In the meantime, this piece of ground became somewhat neglected and overgrown. Legend has it that in the 1940s, the pastor at St. George sent a work crew to clean up the trees and vines that were taking over the cemetery. They took their assignment seriously and used a bulldozer to clean off the side of the hill. Now all that remains is the cross.
So, do you see the cross? Walk across the field until you reach the crucifix, and look under the base for the letterbox. Just remember to show reverance. This is still a cemetery maintained by St. George and the bodies are still underground.
