11/08 I discovered this box missing and will replace soon.

Difficulty- moderate, some hills and you'll need a good hour for this ?1-2mile walk.

From Rt 1 Shaw’s intersection, turn toward the Route 97 intersection. Take Rt. 97 north toward the airport. Just after the airport park on the right side of Rt. 97 where a pull out is evident. Walk down this driveway and pass through the closed gait to the entrance of Phillips Nature Preserve about .1mile.

There is a kiosk here on your right that will give some background on the area. Pass the trail that goes left down the hill (you will return via this trail). Follow the path straight up the hill past the path diverging right another .1 mile, to the gateway to the old estate foundation remains. Here you will find a clearing that becomes a field of wildflowers in the summer. Follow the path through this area to a somewhat steep path down along an old stone stairway. At the bottom of the hill you will see a pillar with a dilapidated stone sculpture. Pass by this and then over the bisecting trail to go up just a short incline. At the top follow the path to the right along this ridge. A trail will cross this one shortly. Take it left down the other side of this short hill. This is a swampy area on either side if the water table is high. Now take your first path right toward the water. Follow this to the end, a peninsula that juts out into the Wenham reservoir. Imagine a full moon reflecting on the waters here, you are almost to the letter box! After taking in the view, retrace the path a short distance taking your first right up another esker (hill). About half way up this hill, look for a downed tree leaning left and balancing on another tree. It is under/behind this rotted stump you will find your treasure.

Be sure to replace the box carefully after doing your stamping for the next letterboxing visitor.

To return, continue up this slight incline to the first path leading down to the left. Take this path to the main trail. Here you may choose to go left and rejoin the directions in, (it is a little shorter if you know where you are going) or go right. The route to the right will explore the rest of this natural area following along the lake shore most of the way. Stay on the main or widest trail. When the trail diverges, take your right to follow the lake shore. Notice the resting bench up the hill to your left. The trail will soon bisect. Take the right if you want to see another vista across the lake and take a rest at yet another bench. Or take a left and continue up toward the entrance. There is a boulder on your left about half way along that is another great resting spot. At the top of the incline you will take a right past the kiosk and down the drive back to your car.
