The official announcement from Mattel has gone national:
Hot Wheels is feeling the Need For Speed, and is going to hit Phillips County full bore on August 6, 2006. On July 10, Mattel announced plans for the day long Hot Wheels festival in the town of Speed. In a press release issued throughout the nation that day, it was stated, “The industry leader in die-cast cars expects a crowd of more than 5,000 people to descend on the small Midwestern city (population 35) and invites collectors and automotive enthusiasts to join in the fun. Geoff Walker, a vice president of Mattel, stated that “Hot Wheels is all about speed, power and performance, so holding an event in a city named Speed makes perfect sense.” The Speed Celebration will get underway with a parade, led by a life-size Hot Wheels car and will end in a 45-acre field that will play host to the day’s activities. Activities will include an extensive car show of classic vehicles and hot rods, a Miss Hot Wheels pageant, a motorcycle show, food and local vendors, as well as a few show-stopping surprises. Attendees will receive a commemorative Hot Wheels event car, while supplies last. The momentum is building to bring the expected thousands of people to Phillips County for the Hot Wheels extravaganza.

Back on May 9, 1999, a group of Hot Wheels enthusiasts gathered at the Kyle Petty Farm in Trinity, NC, and put the finishing touches on a Hot Wheels track stretching 2,863 feet long. That length turned out to be a world record and subsequently ended up being entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. On July 5-6, Eric Ostendorff, senior staff designer for the Hot Wheels Design division of Mattel Hot Wheels, visited Speed and started working on calculations for a track that would eclipse the Kyle Petty Guinness world record. After making his calculations of the slope of the road through Speed, and its gentle incline as it stretches outside of town, Ostendorff feels than an attempt at the Guinness Record is feasible during the Need For Speed Hot Wheels event on August 6.

Directions to Speed, Kansas from Hays, Kansas:
Go north on Highway 183 out of Hays, approximately 55 miles, until you reach the small town of Glade. At Glade, turn west onto number 9 at the Triple C Café, which is located on the northwest corner of the intersection. Keep going west about 6 miles. Speed is located on the south side of the highway.

CLUES:

Turn south on 500 Rd. into Speed. Keep going south until you come to the grain elevator on your right. On the south side of the elevator, you will see the office, next to the shop.
A few feet further south, you will pass two gas pumps with three white fuel tanks in the rear. There you will turn onto a road going west. Go past the cottonwood tree on your left, then, continue a short way down the curved road. When you reach the S curve, look to your left again. You will see some cedar trees, and in the midst of them stands a tall cottonwood branching out into three trunks. Go behind the tree and look for a rock.

This letterbox is on private property, but permission has been granted by the owner.
However, several feet ahead of you, is a gate with a sign that says, “No Trespassing.” The owner of the property beyond has not given permission, so please obey the sign. If you reach the gate, you’ve gone too far, anyhow!
