Growing up a kid in the 1970s was a blast for me. One of my favorite things to do was watching Saturday morning cartoons. As awesome as the cartoons were (I'll save that for another letterbox hike)The commercials were sometimes just as cool, especially the cereal ones. Cap N Crunch, Coco Puffs, Trix, Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles, Fruit Loops etc. When my mother went grocery shopping the cereal aisle was always the highlight of the trip. Picking out your own cereal was a very exciting thing to do as a kid. And the prizes included in the cereal box were always very cool. My favorites were Franken Berry, Count Chocula and Boo Berry. The Characters were so cool and the cereal was great. When you find these boxes write down your favorite childhood cereal.

I'm renaming this hike from letterboxing to cerealboxing...

Your monster hunt will begin on the multi colored trail (YELLOW ORANGE BLUE)which is on the right hand side of the pond. Cross two bridges, climb a set of stairs, pass by a bench and descend another set of stairs. BLUE veers off to the right, stay with YELLOW/ORANGE. Cross a zig/zag bridge and continue straight on YELLOW. A stream on your right will stay with you for quite a while. After crossing 6 bridges you'll come to an intersection where a bridge crosses the stream, stay on YELLOW. Within 5 minutes you'll cross the stream on a bridge, now the stream is on your left. Next you'll pass by a narrow trail on the right that leads up to a hill, from this point count off 2 blazed trees. From the second one take a reading of 240 degrees and walk 18 steps to a very large moss covered rock. Climb up and over it. Hidden in a small cave you'll meet "COUNT CHOCULA"

COUNT CHOCULA - Introduced in 1971 by General Mills he's the first and most popular of the monsters. The Count is chocolate in flavor with marshmallows. He can be found year round.

After stamping in, return to the trail and continue on. The trail will turn rocky and go slightly uphill, soon the YELLOW trail will end at the intersection of BLUE/YELLOW continue straight (do not go up the hill) Then it will turn sharply to the left with the stream follow it over the bridge staying on BLUE/YELLOW (check out the fallen tree and how it has snaked it's way through the others. Continue on as the trail winds it's way around. Soon you'll walk through a tree that has been cut in two. Now keep your eyes peeled for two good size, somewhat flat stones on your left. The second is covered in moss. Take a reading of 180 degrees and walk 21 steps to a 4 sister tree one of which has past on to the afterlife. Behind the tree you'll find the tomb of "FRANKEN BERRY"

FRANKEN BERRY - Also introduced in 1971 "FB" is my favorite of the monsters. Strawberry in flavor with marshmallow treats. Unfortunately due to poor marketing FRANK is hard to find with the exception of Halloween time.

Back to the trail you'll soon notice RED sharing the same trees as BLUE/YELLOW but not for long when they split go with RED. Next you'll cross a small stream on three flat stones and continue on as the trail descends, you'll pass by hundreds of fallen trees and cross a bridge. By now the trail widens and is covered with wood chips. Soon RED splits itself in two, it won't matter which path you choose they meet up again at the RED blazed paper birch. Continue on... just before leaving the forest turn right onto the BLUE/YELLOW trail and count off 47 steps to a collection of stones and dead wood on the left. Look behind the center most rock to find "BOO BERRY" in his hauted house.

BOO BERRY - Introduced in 1973, this blueberry flavored ghost would always end up scaring Frank and The Count in the commericals. Although a little easier to find than Frank these days he's suffered the same fate as Frank. Like the others he's always available at Halloween.

When finished head back down to RED turn right and leave the forest, the trail soon turns to gravel and will lead you back to your car. I hope you enjoyed the hike, and remember you don't have to be a kid to enjoy these cereals.(just a kid at heart)
