There’s nothing like the thrill of a bracing, exhilarating hours-long hike along Pennsylvania’s infamous rocky stretches of the Appalachian Trail.

And the hike to this box is most certainly nothing like that thrill.

It’s a drive-by. A drive-by on the 2,174 mile-long Appalachian Trail. What kind of hiker am I? What kind of letterboxer? What was I thinking?

Isn’t this just a sacrilege?

Park at the summit of Blue Mountain Road, between Northampton and Carbon Counties. Blue Mountain Ski Resort will be a mile or so to your north. There’s a rough parking lot right at the AT trailhead (my compact car doesn’t appreciate when I use it), and a better lot a bit south of there. Both lots are on the southbound side of the road.

Start hiking, or ambling, or crawling for that matter, toward Georgia.

Pass two green barriers.

Come to a kiosk on the right.

From the kiosk, walk (or crawl) six paces at 335* to a tree with rocks behind.

The desolating sacrilege is wedged in the rocks.
