Bernard Devoto edited the Journals of Lewis and Clark. He spent some time in 1953 in this cedar grove writing and enjoying the area. His ashes were scattered over the area by airplane in 1955.
Follow hiway 12 from Lolo MT. west over Lolo pass. about 9 miles down the Idaho side of the pass is the cedar grove. Or drive up the Lochsa River from the west. Follow the path on the river side, be sure to read the signs. At the "Rings of Time" sign go 9 steps (east) to a faint trail that goes to the stream. At the stream bank there are 3 Cedar trees on your left, and past them is a large stump with a box in the top under a rock.
The second box is on the north side of the road down the trail to the left. There are 2 trees that are broken off about 15 feet tall. Past the second one is a tree with a twisted root. The box is at the base under some bark.
The snail stamps are a memory of a picnic we had here when our boys were young and found lots of snails and slugs.
