American mushroom cultivation started in Kennett Square in 1896. Today, the town and surrounding area produce 35% of the American mushroom crop and 13% of the world's mushroom crop. Kennett Square calls itself the "Mushroom Capital of the World."

Your search for a Shroom with a View starts at the main entrance of Anson Nixon Park, following North Walnut Street to Waterworks Drive. The project to convert this former landfill to a park began in 1986. The park opened on 6/12/93 and is named after one of the leaders of the conversion project.

You will notice two large sandboxes along the right side of Waterworks as you enter the park. Continue to the lot and walk back to these sandboxes, where you will find a gravel trail that goes into the woods.

About a minute after you start down the trail, it will split. You can take either direction - the path on the right will be prettier but have more bugs and mud and the park may eventually close it. The trails rejoin quickly.

After the trails rejoin, you will start to notice black posts spaced along the trail. These used to have environmental information on them, but most have been damaged.

At the third black post, you may learn what kind of tree has bright red blossoms in the spring. Turn around and look down at the Suspicious Pile of Debris at the bottom of the double tree for a Shroom with a View. When you finish, please put it back into the dark.

You can leave the way that you came, or continue to a T-junction further down the trail, then make a left and come down a wider, busier path back to the parking lot.

This is an easy walk that should only take about 10-15 minutes, but can be muddy and buggy, especially after heavy rain.
