Lion of Tsavo

NOTE: This box is missing. Will advise when and if replaced.

Just before the beginning of the 20th century, two big cats became notorious man-eaters in East Africa. In 1898 the British began building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. The lions were credited with killing 140 of the workers. The chief engineer of the project, Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson killed the first of these man-eating, death defying lions on December 9, 1898. This lion measured, from tip of nose to end of tail, 3 meters in length and weighted so much that Col. Patterson needed eight men to carry the carcass back to camp. Three weeks later he killed the second. The bridge was finished in 1899. We suggest you watch "The Ghost and the Darkness" on DVD for an intense evening of movie watching.

The lion you seek is a bit less vicious but just as cunning. He is hiding in a wooded area of dense growth among some interesting tree oddities and assorted Florida fauna. He lies in this jungle awaiting you to track him to his lair. Grab your gear and family and on a great adventure; go lion hunting.

Begin your hunt at the Arlington Lion's Club Park. Find the nature trail and stay on the main path. You will pass a bench, a gnarled, upturned tree root, and the ranger's house all on the left. The trail narrows a bit as you move into the first turning, then it widens out again. Farther down the trail another very gnarled oak tree trunk stands on your right. Take twelve steps (or 6 paces) further down the trail & look immediately to your left, 90-degree angle, to see the giant oak just off the main trail, behind which your quarry awaits. Step onto the palm strewn path toward the oak. The lion waits beneath a mossy mane behind the mighty oak.
