This is a tribute to Mark and Sue Pepe for all their letterboxing enthusiasm…and our shared love to Vermont. These stamps are recreations of art that has appeared on the Pepe blog over the past few years.

The Merck Forest has over 3,100 acres of spectacular Vermont landscape and 28 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails. They also have a working farm and organic gardens. They are open 365 days per year and your four legged companions are welcome (at least dogs and horses, anyway!!!) Mountain bikes are not permitted.

Find your way to Old Route 7 and Route 30 in Manchester, Vermont. From Manchester, follow Route 30 for 8.2 miles to Route 315. Turn onto Route 315 for approximately 2.6 miles (top of hill). Driveway to Merck Forest will be on the left. Proceed ½ mile up driveway (unpaved) to parking area and Visitor’s Center. The Visitor’s Center is open until 4 or 4:30pm and has indoor rest rooms. When the center is open, there is a clean outdoor restroom. These boxes do not contain ink…so bring your own! NOW…. “Get out there and Box!”

We Let the Dogs Out
Start at the visitor’s center and take the trail to your left as you exit the center. Very soon, you will come to a big tree on the right that one might be able to stand inside. From this tree, take about 27 paces (2 steps to a pace) where you will see a birch tree trunk on your left that has fallen downhill. Looking up this hill, find the outcrop of rock. Make your way up there and find the last rock on the far right side of the outcrop. It is to the right of a 3 sister white birch (one sister has fallen). Look under the rock closest to the tree with a smaller rock door hiding the prize.

Pepe F-1000 Box

This is a bonus box commemorating Mark and Sue finding their 1000th letterbox. There is no ink in this box… pink and blue might be appropriate!

DISCOVER Mark and Sue by picking up the Discovery Trail on your right after you pass the sugar house. Continue past the intersection with the Wildlife trail. Soon, the Discovery trail will enter the woods. At this point, continue straight rather than follow the trail signs, and you will quickly come to an open meadow. There is a break in the stone wall that borders this meadow. Look along the stone wall to the right until you see a tree that is naked on the side facing the meadow. Look for an upright rock at the base of this tree with many smaller rocks around it guarding your prize(s). Return to the discovery trail and hike back (either the way you came or complete the trail back to the visitor’s center).

Dead Duck Box

Make you way to the farm center. Visit with the animals! Take some pictures! Pass the windmill on your right and head toward the cattle grazing area. Read about these special and rare Lineback cattle that they are genetically preserving. (Stonelot Road toward the Stone Lot.) There will be a trail to your left before you begin to descend on the Stone Lot trail. Follow this all the way to the top of the pasture. Be careful as the fence is electric!

At the back corner of the pasture, cross over the stone wall and you will find a grassy trail that runs parallel to the farm pastures. Take this trail with the stone wall on your left (toward the barns). Very soon, you will come to a single large evergreen on the right side of the trail. You will see another trail at the tree line behind this tree that heads uphill (but you will not take this trail).

Stand on the path in front of this evergreen tree trunk and look at the stone wall. Seek the dead duck close to the top of the wall directly across from the tree trunk. Continue back to the farm on this trail with the wall on your left. Visit with the chickens and pigs before returning to your car – or explore more of this wonderful forest. There are several ponds to explore too. Camping is permitted. Enjoy!
