We need to take the Zilker Preserve (in Austin, Texas) letterbox off of the website.
It has been removed by someone and we're no longer interested in maintaining/replacing it.

Sorry !

ZILKER NATURE PARK & PRESERVE

Located at 2100 Barton Springs Road, Zilker Metropolitan Park is considered "Austin's most loved park." This 351 acre park is home to a variety of recreation opportunities and special events for the individual or the whole family.

History
In 1918, A.J. Zilker deeded the 35 acres surrounding Barton Springs to the City of Austin. In 1932, Zilker agreed to give the military school established during the First World War an additional 330 acres, joining the 35 acres on the north side of the original tract if the city would buy the acreage from the school for $200,000. This action was approved in a bond election and despite the ecomomic depression of the 1930's. the land was developed into Zilker Park.

The National Park Service assisted with the planning of Zilker Park and construction was performed by many groups, including workers from Reconstruction Finance Corporation's relief program, the Citizens Works Administration, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

DIRECTIONS:

Head west on Barton Springs Road and drive through main part of Zilker Park until passing under MoPac -- road will curve to your left/south and begin to look like a southbound access road. After taking the curve you need to turn right onto Rollingwood Drive and cross a small bridge over Eanes Creek in to a residential area - - the City of Rollingwood is just ahead. Stop just after crossing the bridge at the park area on your left/south. (If you see a sign for the "Zilker Clubhouse" on your right, you've gone too far.) After parking walk south towards the picnic tables. Look for the letterbox near the old, large, stone bar-b-que pit. You'll find the box under a stack of stones. Please cover well after retrieving your stamp...and leave us a little note telling us where you're from.

Afterwards, look to the south and 45 degrees to your left to see an opening to a trail down to the creek bed. For a nice, short walk continue to your left towards the bridge you drove over earlier. You don't want to go too far to the west (away from downtown) because residents own the property, including the creek, in those areas.

You may also want to visit the Austin Nature Center....a fabuous place for kids of all ages.

Location
302 Nature Center Drive Zilker Preserve is at the west end of Zilker Park west of Loop One (MoPac). Park on Barton Springs Road in the gravel lot under MoPac bridge.

Trails
Extensive and well-marked trails lead through meadows, shaded woods and along cliff edges. Trailheads are located off Stratford Drive and at the end of the Austin Nature Center driveway, through the Center's Bird Enclosures. Great collection of rescued birds, including hawks, owls, eagles, roadrunners and others. Don't miss the view of downtown Austin from the Overlook Trail.

The Austin Nature Center also has a Dinosaur Dig pit and an excellent educational center with restrooms, vending machines, air-conditioning and other rescue animals like Maggie the Coyote, Casper the Oppossum, racoons, bobcats, foxes, etc.
