*** This box is NOT on National Park Service property. It is about 20 feet outside the NPS boundary ***

Colorado has the largest population of Big Horn Sheep in the world, living in different areas throughout the state. They prefer steep, high mountain terrain, with plenty of grass, shrubs and rock cover. Many live on inaccessible cliffs, but the Grand Ram didn’t want to make finding him too strenuous for Rocky Mountain Letterboxers, especially those enjoying the Grand Grand Lake Gathering.

To find Grand Ram, take highway 34 North past Shadow Mountain lake, following the signs to Rocky Mountain National Park. Pass the turnoff for Grand Lake on your right, and proceed .2 miles to a parking lot by a real estate office on the right (east) side of the road.

The trailhead is between the real estate office and the highway. Walk north along the trail. The trail will be wide enough for a motor vehicle, but only horses, bikes and pedestrians are allowed. You will pass a little boy fishing in the pond on your right with a hungry bear watching him. After walking for about 5 minutes, you will notice a narrow trail on your right that heads up the hill. Follow this narrow trail for about 80 steps (167 feet according to my GPS) until you see a boulder on the right side of the trail that almost blocks the path. From this boulder, take a bearing of 250 degrees to a very large boulder uphill. Under the SE side of the large boulder, Grand Ram is waiting for your visit.

The total distance to the box is ¼ mile and takes a leisurely 7 minutes each way.

Box contains handcarved stamp, handmade journal and pen. There is a first finders reward. Please bring your own ink.
