The Wizard Arrives

Note: Box #2 is currently MIA and will be replaced when the weather gets warmer. We have also placed a new logbook with box #3. Please be sure to hide it well.

Box #1 Arriving at School
Your journey begins as you arrive at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which from all outward appearances looks exactly like the Grange Estate in Havertown, PA (http://thegrangeestate.org/). Joined by your new friends Ron and Hermione (GRANGE Estate… Hermione GRANGEr… coincidence or a clever ruse to keep the Muggles guessing?), you approach the castle by following the dirt trail that starts at the Mansion Walkway sign in the parking lot. At the bottom of the trail, make a right and follow the paved trail through the porte cochere. You will then pass Washington’s Walk on your left. Continue following the paved trail as it passes the castle and turns to the right. You will soon see a dirt trail on the left with a chain blocking your access. This is the Forbidden Forest, off limits to all pupils. If you look into the forest, you just may see the Hogwarts Express rumbling by on its way from 69th Street to Norristown. Continue along the paved trail. Just past the blocked forest trail you will pass two large, multi-trunk trees on your left. 7 steps past the second multi-trunk tree you will see a smaller tree with a single trunk (also on your left). Look behind this tree - you will see a pile of rocks at its base. Box #1 can be found beneath the rocks.

Box #2 The Sorting Hat
You’ve arrived at school but you still do not know which house will become your family for the next seven years. Not quite sure how the sorting process works, you turn and start walking back up the paved trail. Just before it turns to the left and leads you back to the castle, you will see a dirt path on your right. Follow this path over a dry stream bed (note: we visited on 11/24 and the stream was not so dry), across a wooden bridge (over an actual stream) and up the steps. Follow the new trail at the top of the steps to the right. You will see a stone wall on your left. Box #2 is in the stone wall almost directly beneath a single, small tree on the hill above the wall. Look for 4 small stones that are slightly lighter in color than the surrounding stones in the wall. You have located the Sorting Hat box. Careful – if you move the wrong stones, you could end up in Diagon Alley.

Box #3 Which house?
The hat twitches. A rip in the brim opens up wide and the hat begins to sing. While it sings about the history of each of the four houses, you decide to walk back toward the castle. If you’re still facing the stone wall, turn to your left. Following the trail, you can go back down the steps, across the bridge and back to the paved road. You can also follow the second dirt path a little further down on your left. It also leads back to the paved trail. The third (and recommended) option is to take the third dirt path on your left. You will cross a wooden bridge and soon you'll see a Wheel House and garden on your right. This is Washington’s Walk. Follow the walk back up to the castle. Once you are back on the paved trail, continue to your right and back through the porte cochere. After you pass through the castle, you’ll see two benches off to the right (across from the barn). Behind the benches is another stone wall which has crumbled. Step behind the bushes (note: as of Spring 2007 the bushes have been trimmed back to about 12") and look behind the crumbled wall. You will find box #3 under several stones behind the wall. Just as you locate this box, the Sorting Hat settles on your head and, after careful consideration, announces…”better be GRYFFINDOR!”

If you are sitting on or standing in front of the bench, the path back to the parking lot will be just to your left.

Notes:
* Please be discrete and rehide the boxes well. The trails are frequently used by Muggles and a previous box at this site disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
* Boxes #1 and #2 contain stamps only. Box #3 contains a stamp and logbook. Please bring your own inkpad and pen.
* Please leave the boxes in the same state you found them. The waterproof bags we put the boxes in have disappeared several times. We would blame muggles but we recently found someone's geocache instructions discarded next to our box. So now we blame the geocachers. What happened to CITO? ;^)
* Stamps are store-bought, but give us some credit – we did have to bid for them on eBay and win the auction.
