Pandora’s Box Letterbox

Carved by Choi
Placed by Ginger Blue on 8/21/06

Trail Length/Time: about 2-2/3 miles/approx. 45 minutes plus stamping time
Trail difficulty: Easy, Mostly level dirt roads and paths with some short hills
Terrain: Forest and pond

Getting there: From Rte 2 in Fitchburg, take Rte 31 South for 4 ½ miles. Take a left onto Rocky Pond Rd. and park in lot.

Clues: From the gate (Leom 7) take Rocky Pond Rd. to Wolf Rock Rd., passing Paradise Alley on your right. Continue south on Wolf Rock Rd. until you reach the junction of King Tut’s Hwy. Here head southwesterly onto the Hwy. In a few minutes you will pass a path on your left and then the trail curves sharply to the left. Another path joins the Hwy on the right at this curve. Take this short connection to another path and turn left. In a minute or two look for a twin oak blazed with a blue rectangle. From this blazed tree, look east to an oak triplet standing at the far side of a stone wall. Bushwhack 18 paces towards the oak triplet and cross the stone wall. Pandora’s Box is hidden in a hole on top of the wall, marked by two small stones and a stick one inch thick. After stamping in, be sure to rehide well returning the stones and stick to mark the spot.
Once back on the trail you may return the way you came or continue on heading south. At the next blue blazed tree take a right heading downhill with a pond off in the distance to your left. A tiny path branches off to the left at the bottom of the hill closer to the pond. Take this and bear right and right again at junctions. Then a quick left at a yellow splotch blaze, down a narrow path heading north parallel to the shore. The main trail is just a few yards to your right. However, this smaller path takes you closer to the pond along a ridge. At a small clearing on top of a hill, head downhill to intersection of wider main trail. Continue north on the main trail. At an intersection where many paths cross the main trail, look for Paradise Alley sign. Stand facing the sign and turn right, still heading north. This will take you back to Rocky Pond Rd. to the Paradise Alley sign you passed near the start of your quest. Turn left onto Rocky Pond Rd. to get back to your car.
