Pirate Pete

This past weekend I got a little letterboxing fever and planted 11 boxes and one Hitchhiker in about 24 hours. The area around Lake Dunmore is a place I have loved to see for thirty years and now felt some of it needed to be shared. The following letterboxes all were placed on August 18 and August 19, 2006:

Duck in the Headlights
Falls of Lana
Silver Lake (3)
Moosalamoo
Spirit in Nature
Robert Frost One
Robert Frost Two
Le Plessis Bourre’
Mr Frimble
Pirate Pete
Makishi Dancer
And the “Spiritual Center” hitch hiker

Take a look at a map for all of them, if you can, before you head out. Most will be close to either Route 73, Forest Road 32, Route 125 or Route 7. Some are quick, some quicker.

10-15 minute walk

Go to the Farwell Forest (with overlook) owned by the New England Forestry Foundation. Where is that? The trail head is in Salisbury and the box itself is in Leicester.

From North get on Route Seven, pass turn off for route 53. About two miles later is a left turn for Maple street. Take this turn, go into the village, past the Post office, take a left at the triangle (you are now on West Shore Road). After the houses, on the right, is a sign for the Forest. Too far and you hit Rodgers road. Park on side before gate.

From South get on Route Seven, in Leicester pass Fern Lake road on right. About a mile plus later is Maple Road on right. There is a car lot with a Two story gorilla holding up a car, road is before lot. Follow road to triangle, keep right (you are now on West Shore road). After houses, on right, is a sign for Forest. Too far and you hit Rodgers road. Park on side, before gate.

Walk up service road. After less then .2 of a mile a field appears on the left. At the top of the hill is a cabin. Stay on road. You will start to curve back up to the cabin. On left you will be pretty clear until you start passing a stand of trees. On left side is a big rock that looks like a bench. When you come level with it take a reading of 180 degrees. Go to a small entrance into woods (left of ferns) walk a few steps until you get to a fallen tree. Go 132 degrees up log to fallen end of tree, underneath this end (and leaves) is the Pirate Pete Letterbox. Go up to cabin and overlook.
At the moment the owners have a geocache contest, with one at Mud Pond (Zip Code 05769). The trail to it is off the east side of the road (hard to find).
