Silver Lake

This past weekend I got a little letterboxing fever and planted 11 boxes and one Hitchhiker in about 24 hours. The area around Lake Dunmore is a place I have loved to see for thirty years and now felt some of it needed to be shared. The following letterboxes all were placed on August 18 and August 19, 2006:

Duck in the Headlights
Falls of Lana
Silver Lake (3)
Moosalamoo
Spirit in Nature
Robert Frost One
Robert Frost Two
Le Plessis Bourre’
Mr Frimble
Pirate Pete
Makishi Dancer
And the “Spiritual Center” hitch hiker

Take a look at a map for all of them, if you can, before you head out. Most will be close to either Route 73, Forest Road 32, Route 125 or Route 7. Some are quick, some quicker.

Silver Lake in Leicester, Vermont is a favorite place among many of the relatives. There are three parking lots and three ways to get there. Open year round.

The first way is on Route 53 by Lake Dunmore. Two parking lots are just south of Branbury State Park on the lake. The northern of the two is small and dirt topped. I would go to the second which is larger aand the trail is more kid friendly. The trail is a forest road past the Falls of Lana. After the Falls is a trail crossing, go left (over the bridge) and head for Rattlesnake Point, go right on the Forest road and Silver Lake is a mile up.

The Third parking lot you take in from Forest Road 32 from Ripton (Route 125, 6.8 miles) or Goshen (Route 73). From which ever direction take Forest Road 27 which is Silver Lake Rd. (2.2 miles) there are signs into the parking area. Two choices down to the Lake. The Goshen Trail leads out of the south of the lot. The second is the Silver Lake trail, which is really the Forest road down to the North end of the Lake. The Goshen trail is .6 of mile to the east side of the lake and is a little more pleasant, the Silver Lake is longer but fewer bugs.

There are three boxes here. Starting places are different so choose your way in.

From Goshen Trail:
Take trail to end. Take a right on Interpretive trail that goes around lake. In a few yards on the right will be a post with “14” on it (as sign about pets and you have gone too far). Take 32 steps. Take very small trail on left. In ten steps you should be going around a white birch log on the left. Take another 7 steps . At about 210 degrees there is a squarish rock. Take about 10 steps to it. The Le Plessis Bourre’ Box will be on back or west side of rock underneath.

From here take trail north past the camp grounds. After awhile there is a sign to go west or continue up to a forest road, take left. It winds around a little, but comes to a bridge over a culvert. Don’t cross. Take a right up the culvert 30 steps. On your right is a stand of 4 white birches and another tree. Get on east side of it take reading of degrees. Take 22 steps to a fallen log. Under east side of log box is covered with wood. This is the Makishi Dancer box (box design was taken from a picture of the actual dancers in Victoria Falls Zimbabwe). Use the brown pen. When finished applying blow on the stamp and then do your imprint. Go back to bridge. Cross over to beach/picnic area (and bathrooms).

After you have rested walk through this area and find trail over dam. Now you are back on the interpretive (Rocky Point) trail. Go to sign “4” (this should be pretty quick). Take 65 steps. Look left. A large birch tree has fallen toward the lake. Left of this tree is a smaller 8 foot log. Look under the Northeast corner under the bark for the Silver Lake Letterbox.

Falls of Lana Trail/ Silver Lake Trail:
Both trails are really the forest road that the government employees use to drive on. Either way get up/down to the lake. Find the dam at the North West corner of the lake. You will do the three boxes in reverse order from above. Take the dam trail and find “4”, come back see the picnic area and beach. Then go east over the culvert bridge turn left, go thirty steps etc. From bridge go east and then south past the camp sites. If you missed “14” the trail head for Goshen trail is just beyond (no real loss of time).

If you have time take the trail around the whole Lake. Thanks for searching!
