NOTE: Recent finder indicates the box is in severe disrepair and the logbook is full. I live 4000 miles away so cannot maintain the box. Am checking for a local to either make repairs or pull the box. Will repost status one way or the other. (Surprised this one lasted 11 years!)

In 1949, the Kernsville Dam was built as part of the Schuylkill River Project to capture coal spoils from the river. The dam creates a quiet meander on this part of the river, a picturesque location for an easy find.

Kernsville Dam Road is located off Industrial Drive in Hamburg, PA, near the junction of I-78 and PA Rt. 61. Map and directions on the Kernsville Dam Wildlife Area page at http://www.schuylkillriver.org/Detail.aspx?id=76

Follow the road to its very end beyond the dam, at a small parking lot with a grassy area by the river. The main footpath leads northwest into the woods. You'll pass an old day use area with a small concrete building on the left. A few minutes later, the trail swings closer to the river's edge and narrows substantially, with several evergreens along the path at your right. When the trail widens again, you'll emerge in an open forest area to your left. See the tall stump with four trunks? It's 8 paces off the trail. You'll find the box at the base of the fifth trunk which you couldn't easily see from the path.

The box is located 10 minutes' easy walking from the trailhead. It's another 10 minutes or less to the trail's end at the railroad, with a large boulder serving as a river overlook.

= Though a very family-friendly walk by day, I recommend you avoid it in the evenings (especially on weekends) as adolescent Muggles congregate here in large herds for pursuits unrelated to letterboxing.
