Hike: ¼ mile RT, 10-foot gain
Stamp: Hand-carved by Ron. This is rare, so you should consider it a collector’s item!

HISTORY
Around 5 pm on April 24, 1964, Officer Lonnie Zamora was chasing a speeding car on the outskirts of Socorro when he heard “an explosion” behind him. When he quit the chase and got a better view from a hill, he observed a metallic object that had landed in a ravine. Officer Zamora saw “two small beings in while coveralls” standing beside it. The vehicle had a unique, red insignia on the outside. The craft emitted a whirring noise and a flame, causing Zamora to run for cover behind his car. As he did so, the craft levitated to about 25 feet above the ground and then quickly disappeared.

What makes this UFO case interesting is that there is quite a bit of evidence on file, as well as some very good photographs of landing indentations. There were also several independent witnesses of the UFO in the air, including an Army sergeant who said it stalled his car as it flew by.

TO THE BOX
From the middle of Socorro, take California Street (State Route 1) south toward the airport. Park your car just past mile marker 61, on the hillside next to the old drive-in movie theatre.

Go to the front row and find the farthest speaker pole on the left, facing the screen. The microbox is inside the cement end of the speaker pole, behind a few small rocks. If it has slipped back some, the pole is light enough that you can lift it and slide the box out.

The stamp image is the symbol that Officer Zamora reported seeing on the spacecraft. The landing site was just west of here. (Insert creepy “ooo-wee-yoo” music here.)
