*** THIS BOX IS OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK ***

HISTORY
Mesa Verde was the home of the Anasazi, recently re-named Ancestral Puebloans, from about 500-1300AD. They left behind countless surface dwellings and many very impressive cliff dwellings. Be sure to get your tickets for Ranger-guided tours of the Balcony House and Cliff Palace – they are unbelievable! When touring the park, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife – we saw wild turkeys, wild horses, mule deer, and a coyote within one hour in the late-afternoon.

Mesa Verde celebrated its 100th Anniversary as a National Park in 2006. It continues to be the only National Park established for the sole purpose of preserving man-made objects. It was one of the eight original World Heritage Sites established by the United Nations in 1978. It was recently named one of the Top 20 Sights You Must See by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

TO THE BOX
Stop at the Sleeping Ute Rest Area on Highway 160, between Cortez and the entrance to Mesa Verde. Park near either sign for the Hiking Trail and follow the gravel path as it winds back out of sight from the picnic tables. When you get near the NE corner of the property, search between the trail and the fence for a low-lying stump pointing toward 328* from north. The box is under the cut end and some loose bark.
