UPDATE 5/30/2007
The first box is missing again and several others may also be gone. Below I have published all of the clues so you can complete your tour of the property and find the trees and whatever boxes remain (some are very small). Sorry for the maintenance delay!

Prouty Forest in Littleton MA is where you will start. To get there take a left onto Wilderness Road just after the Police/Fire station on Foster Street. Look for the green and white sign. Follow Wilderness Road (dirt road) for 400 yards to the parking area and the gate. This quest consists of a series of six boxes which will take you on an interesting tour of the property as you look for specially marked trees and gather information about them. Each box will lead you to the next.
A brochure containing more information is available at the kiosk by the gate or in the New England Forestry Foundation offices (the white house to your right).

A letterbox is the Questing goal.
Six boxes are the final toll.
They will lead you to your fate
Starting at the near green gate
Write the common names for trees
Find them all, now we decree
Walk on south, in summer or fall.
Nine tree titles there are in all
Find a bench on the path you take.
Look across to a stone wall break.
Near a maple and the rocks,
That’s where you’ll find the first box.

Box 1
Look at your map
To mark your step.
Go up the hill;
Hurry if you will.

A White Ash sign will be on the right.
Take the first turn after this sight.
Find the next tree that is labeled.
It is one that is physically abled.

Box 2
Soon you will see a lake (not a bay).
Learn to recognize White Oak on the way.
Note the look and feel of its bark.
Remember how the leaves make their mark.

When a Long Lake is in view,
A triangle of White Oaks will mark a clue.
Under a rock in the middle of this stand,
Look for a box with directions so grand.

Box 3
Turn due north and walk back up the hill.
Pass the loop trail. (Like Jack and Jill?)
Find a sign for a Paper and White Birch.
Fifty paces past this begin your search.

Look to the left for a tree with a hole;
On the right is the real find, truth be told.
Under a Red Oak bent at 30 degrees,
Find a box with the next decrees.

Box 4
Take your steps to the very top.
At the summit be sure to stop.
Wait for everyone to gather there.
Don’t hurry ahead, that wouldn’t be fair.

Look inside logs with art and color.
Find a plastic pill box with another
Clue to lead you on your way.
Keep moving upward, and don’t delay.

Box 5
Unlock the clues given below;
The final box it will show.
Hurry now, and don’t be late.
You’re almost there and doing great!

Fill in the blanks with the specified letter in the WHOLE common name for the following trees.
4th letter in the Hickory
2nd letter in the Birch
8th letter in the Cedar
1st letter in the Dogwood
8th letter in the Maple that is NOT the Sugar Maple
14th letter in the Ironwood

1st letter in the Maple that is NOT the Red Maple
2nd letter in the Oak
6th letter in Ironwood
6th letter in the Cedar

Near a ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___, you will find the final box.

Box 6
And now you’ve reached the end result!
Wasn’t too hard for a kid (or adult)
Stamp the pamphlet that you brought along.
Record this trip in prose or song.

On the back you’ll find a spot
To tell us what you really thought.
And then it would be SUPER cool
If you would send it to our Middle School!

Stamp your pamphlet to show you were here.

This series of letterboxes was originally placed for sixth grade science students at the Littleton Middle School.
