The Pilot Bay Lighthouse sits overlooking Kootenay Lake. The lighthouse was lit on June 13, 1904 with an oil lamp. It was the 4th navigational aid on the lake, but the only one to look like a lighthouse. It was taken out of service on June 30, 1993. On July 20, 1995 it became Pilot Bay Provincial Park. It now has an outhouse and a picnic table for your convenience.

The Kootenay Lake Ferry, which travels between Balfour and Kootenay Bay, is the longest free ferry in the world.

Take the Kootenay Lake ferry from Balfour (after a swim at Ainsworth Hot Springs) over to Kootenay Bay. Coming off the ferry immediately turn right/south past the washrooms on a road. After 3 miles start watching for the Pilot Bay sign on the right side. Walking up the hill is quite a sight. Climb the lighthouse. (Don't forget to open the trapdoor to go outside.)

Look to the ferry. Down on the right is a table with a bush full of summer berries. There you will find your treasure. (Ignore these directions as it was stolen.)

This was "Missing" Unfortunately it was gone before it was found. I placed it poorly. We went back to replace it in November 2009, but did not bring a new rubber stamp. Then we went up in February of 2011, but it was so buried in snow we could not get to it. So finally today 3/25/12 we replaced the box to a new location.

New Directions: Standing on the lakeside of the lighthouse, look east towards the hill behind the lighthouse. Spy the stump on the left side of the hill. Just below the stump is a flat rock. Under it find your treasure hidden behind many rocks. Please bury the box carefully so as not to be seen by others. This may be a busy area in the summer.
