While boating on Lake Umbagog, head to the Cedar Stump campground at the base of the Rapid River. Tie-up just upstream of the campground on the same side of the river. Walk inland several yards and turn right onto the path that leads upstream. After about ten minutes of singletrack you'll come to an old road. Continue to the right, heading upstream. About five minutes up the road, look to the right for an old car... must've missed the sign for the canoe portage! Continue uphill as the road leads away from the river, go down through a dip where a water crossing is made easier by two logs, and uphill again to a grassy clearing (~15 min from old car). Look to the right for a path marked by two boulders at the entrance, large on the left and smaller on the right. Follow the singletrack path through the big blow-downs and listen for the call of the river. Beware- No camping, No fires! Immediately past the "no camping" tree turn to your left. Walk 15 steps into the forest to large rock ledge. At rock turn left and walk 5 steps along the wall to the skeleton of a large evergreen which once grew out of the rock. Look at ground level under the rock overhang... the Rapid River is hiding behind a log there.

A few feet further up the trail you'll find a nice picnic spot at Smooth Ledge. This is a very popular area for kayakers who like to play in the waves created by the ledges.

Hiking time to box is ~30 min. for a family with young kids...a great way to stretch your legs after a day on the water. Cedar Stump box is in the neighborhood, so be sure to stop by!

(Although actually placed in the state of Maine, we're following the convention of listing this box in NH since the access and the other Lake Umbagog boxes are in NH.)
