Look at the birds of the air;
They do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
And yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Matthew 6:26

Midland is located on the Central Flyway, a major migration route for North American birds. Because there are few natural bodies of water, birds flying over this arid land have to take advantage of every opportunity they can to find food and water. Facilities like the Sibley Nature Center provide a great oasis for birds and other wildlife, despite being surrounded by ball fields and golf courses. This letterbox is a part of my Quilt Block Series. The quilt block represented here celebrates the magic and wonder of the migration of birds. Some fly thousands of miles, flying south for the winter and north for the summer. These annual migrations assure the survival of the species and provide us all with the opportunity of enjoying the varied types and always breathtaking beauty of birds.

Directions:

This letterbox is placed at Hogan Park in far north Midland. Go north on SH 349 (Big Spring St.) to Wadley. Turn east on Wadley and pass Lamesa Road. On the left you will see the Sibley Nature Learning Center. Turn left onto Sibley Circle. Pass the Sibley Nature Learning Center and the Midland Women’s Club building. On the left is a parking lot and on the right is the start of the Sibley Nature Trail.

To the box:

Take the north trail. When you come to a “Y” stay left and go to the pond, where you will see a small clearing on your left with three benches placed in a “U”. This is an outdoor classroom. Go to the benches. Standing with your back to the middle bench, look up to the left. In the near distance is a bird-watching blind and farther out a purple martin house. Take 8 steps forward to a large tree with a bird house in it. On the east side of the tree is a dead log lying on the ground. By the log you will find the camo letterbox under bark and twigs.
