**Unfortunately, this box has gone missing for the second time. We hope to replace it again soon****

*THIS BOX HAS BEEN REPLACED AS OF 7/15/07!!

Occupying the former grounds of one of Newport's grandest estates, Brenton Point State Park affords its visitors one of the most commanding and spectacular views on the East Coast. The park is located at the point of land where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic, midway along renowned Ocean Drive. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, hiking, fishing or just relaxing with the cool breezes and majestic views of the Atlantic.
To read about the fascinating history of Brenton Point, visit: http://www.riparks.com/brentonhistory.htm

We have enjoyed flying kites at Brenton Point for years, and our kids thought it would be a great spot to place our first letterbox.

From the Newport Bridge (toll) – take the downtown Newport exit (238 south), and take a right at the end of the ramp. Take a right onto America’s Cup Avenue. Take a right onto Thames Street. Following the signs for Ocean Drive, you will take a right onto Wellington Ave, a right onto Harrison Ave, and a second right to stay on Harrison Ave. You will pass Fort Adams on your right. Take a right onto Ridge Road. Brenton Point State Park will be on your left. Take a left into the first entrance, and continue on until you make your way to the “Portuguese Navigators Monument” on your right. This is the starting point for this letterbox. Find a place to park your car.

From the Portuguese Navigators Monument, stand with the water at your back.
Carefully cross the street, and head to the pole where flags sometimes fly.
While standing between “Dennis” & “Pearson”, you will see a large stone wall. Head to the gap in the wall that is directly in front of you.
Looking to the right, you will see another stone wall with a large gap. Head through the wall, which leads you into the Japanese Tortoise Garden. The visitor’s center will be on your right. Proceed Northeast into the garden. Walk past the 3 large rocks on your left, passing the juniper tortoise on your right. Continue past the tortoise until you come to a stone bench on your left. Pass over the bench, and take a left to travel through a short “tree tunnel”, and continue on to the dirt road. Follow this dirt road until you get to the stone pillar on your right, and here you will take a right to continue on another dirt path. There will be an abandoned house on your left, and just up ahead will be a big sprawling tree our kids have dubbed “Monkey’s Delight”.
Continue straight on this path until you come to a stone tower. This is believed to be an old windmill. If you are not afraid of heights, there is a great view from the top of the tower!
At the northeast side of the tower lies a large fallen tree. This is where the original box had been hidden, & went missing.
Now, return back to Monkey's Delight. You will see two rocks to the left of the tree. The new box is hidden under the rock furthest from the tree. Please rehide carefully, as this is a well travelled spot.

You can either return the way you came, or –
When you get back to the intersection of the road with the stone pillar, take a RIGHT. The abandoned house will now be on your right. Take a left at the electrical box onto the stone pathway. This will lead you out to a clearing. The main parking lot and the ocean will be straight ahead. Take a left to head back to the monument.

While here, you can enjoy flying kites, or check out some of the other great sights Newport has to offer!
