History: The cross on top of La Jolla's Mt. Soledad dates back to 1913, when Pacific Beach residents built a cross out of redwood and erected it atop the mountain. Thieves allegedly removed it 10 years later. It was replaced in 1934, was felled by high winds in 1952. In 1954, the Mt. Soledad Memorial Assoc. erected the current cross to commemorate soldiers of the Korean and two world wars. Over the years, the cross has been the subject of much controversy for those who resent religious symbols on public property. Fortunately, Mr. Natural doesn't let that bother him. He just likes the view from up there and I hope you do to.

Directions: From Hwy 5, Take the Garnet exit and head west on Garnet. Turn right (North) on Soledad Mountain Rd. and go until it ends at a ‘T’ intersection. Turn right onto La Jolla Scenic Rd. South. and proceed to the entrance at the top of the mountain. Park in the lower lot (on your left as you enter).

Clue:
Walk up and around the cross going clockwise. To the West you will see La Jolla Shores and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography pier. To the North is a large white Mormon church along Hwy 5. East you will see Miramar Marine Air Base and the Julian Mountains in the distance. To the South is Downtown San Diego, Mission Bay and (on a clear day) you can see the Coronado Islands offshore and sometimes the US/Mexico border.

Once you've circumambulated the cross, head down the hill. On the South side of the road look for a lone sidewalk. Follow the sidewalk to Binks' Memorial Bench. Facing East, take 13 steps to an oak with slanted trunk. Mr. Natural is under the trunk covered by rocks and leaves. Please seal up the canister when you are through stamping and re-cover him well so he won't get muggled. Enjoy :)

P.S. Mr. Natural would like to thank "Silent Hunter" for the TLC show to him. It is very much appreciated.
