Dino Digs #1, #2, & #3
Letterboxes

Start your adventure at Eakin Community Park.

You can find Eakin Park from 495 by taking Rt 50 West (Arlington Blvd) to Prosperity Ave. Turn left on to Prosperity. You will find Eakin on your left immediately after passing over a crosswalk. Park in the parking area there.

After parking you will notice the playground area. This is a fun playground with a stream just beyond it. That stream is infamous in our family for boat races and rock throwing.

Since we have aspiring paleontologists in the family we only thought it appropriate that we make our first letterboxes DINO DIGS!

On your way to Dino Dig #1 you can look for the new letterbox placed by the Cubmaster, called Cub Scout Pack 656.

DINO DIG #1: THIS ONE HAS JUST BEEN REPORTED AS DESTROYED. WE HAVE NOT CONFIRMED THIS YET, BUT JUST SO YOU'RE AWARE. WE WILL WORK ON GETTING THIS ONE REPLACED. (6/22/08)

We’re going to start our adventure by heading to the trail (Accotink trail/CCT) just left of the playground (the same trail as the crosswalk you just drove over to get to the park – however, don’t cross over the road, go the other direction on the trail staying on the same side of Prosperity as the parking lot). Keep going straight on the trail until you come to a fork, take the left fork onto the gravel path. You will pass a pond on your right that is also good for rock throwing and frog watching. After enjoying the pond continue on until you come to another fork in the trail. You will see tennis courts on your right, but again you will take the left fork up the hill to the greenish power pole at the top.
When you are at the greenish pole turn left 90° and walk along the tree line for approximately 90 steps until you come to a rather small, but unmistakable path into the woods. Go about 15 steps into the woods along the path and stop with the large fire pit on your left. Look right. You will see a good sized pine tree that is half fallen down. Go to the base of that tree and look under the cinderblock at the base. There you will find Dino Dig #1. Please replace the cinderblock once you have enjoyed the contents of Dino Dig #1.

DINO DIG #2: THIS LETTERBOX HAS BEEN REPLACED AS OF 11/24/06 AND MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION (hopefully much less likely to flood)! These clues will lead you to the new location.
To find this extinct creature you will travel back up the small path to the tree line. Continue walking along the tree line proceeding over to the gardens. Looking straight ahead at the gardens turn left and walk along the tree line to a small island of trees in the clearing. When standing at the trees as you approach them look right. Notice a tree with six large trunks just a couple yards into the woods. Dino Digs #2 can be found in the middle of those trunks--where they all meet together.
Please replace carefully once you have finished enjoying the contents of Dino Dig #2.

DINO DIG #3: THIS ONE IS CONFIRMED MISSING. WE WILL TRY TO FIND A LESS FLOOD PRONE AREA AND REPLACE IT. (6/22/08) To find this fearsome dino you will need to go back the way you came - down the hill back to the gravel path. Take the gravel path back past the pond to the main paved CCT trail. Turn left onto the CCT trail. Continue on the CCT trail past the sandy volleyball court and baseball fields on your left. Continue until you reach the 1.75 mile post (note that coming from the other direction it is the .75 mile post). Once at that post, look left and find the large fallen tree. Go through the break/gap in that tree and look left on the ground on the backside of the tree. Underneath a pile of sticks you will find Dino Dig #3. Please replace the pile of sticks once you are finished enjoying the contents of Dino Dig #3.

We hope you enjoy the Dino Digs! Please feel free to e-mail us at handmadebylara@yahoo.com for comments, compliments, or problems with the letterboxes. Have fun!

NOTE: If Dino Digs has not satiated your appetite for letterboxing quite yet, see “Get Into the Game” which is a short walk further up the trail from Dino Dig #3.
