The first cemetery for Company Shops (the original name of the Burlington) was located in an area without any streets or roads, except Front Street, which ended at the cemetery.

In 1890, Elon College opened. About three years later, after Burlington was incorporated, merchants wanted to open a road to Elon, so they could get the students’ business. The city council of Burlington voted 3-2 to move the bodies to the new Pine Hill cemetery. When the state government got wind that the city was moving the bodies without permission, Mayor Bill Hall, and the entire city council, were arrested.
Later, the two councilmen who voted against the measure were released.

After a trial, the remaining council members were fined and sentenced to the penitentiary, but their sentences were suspended. Eventually, the townspeople gave permission to have family members reburied at Pine Hill and Front Street was opened all the way to Elon. The first documented burial at Pine Hill was Leonora Stafford, who died May 8, 1889, when she was 11 years old.

Start your search at a shady spot to rest. Stand on the sidewalk outside the entrance and look for the Rauhut family abode. Stop in and give your regards to Charles. While standing in his doorway, you’ll see two magnolias. Nestled in the arms of one is the treasure you seek.

After replacing the letterbox, turn to your left and walk a bit to say hello to Leonora.

This cemetery is a popular place for walkers and joggers, so please be discreet when replacing the letterbox.
