Roy Rogers was my childhood hero. Now that I am older, I see him as a man worthy of being admired for the fine husband, father, and actor that he was. My daughter thought it fitting that this be my first letterbox.
In Nacogdoches, at the east end of Pilar Street (1 block south of Main Street), turn right into the Soccer fields. Park there and walk east to the trail along Lanana Creek. Following the trail go under the train trestle. The trail makes a large curve to the west then turns to the north and goes back under the same train track. Look for the tree with the large circle 3 painted on it. Go the the circle 3, turn toward the track and walk 12 steps. Look down to your left and see a piece of drain pipe at the exposed roots of the large multi-trunked tree. Move the pipe piece and the leaves and find the letterbox. After stamping, carefully replace the box in its hiding place with the leaves and piece of drain over it.
This part of the trail is less visited than the main part beginning at Liberty Hall north of Main Street, but you still need to keep an eye out for other people, especially during soccer season.
Lanana Creek Trail
Originally an Indian footpath, this 2.5-mile trail weaves through thickets of paw-paw, dogwood and scarlet blooming buckeye. It is very popular with hikers, joggers, and bikers, especially in the Spring and Fall. Since it crosses the Stephen F. Austin University Campus you'll meet a lot of runners on the trail. www.visitnacogdoches.org
