HODGEE LETTERBOX

Rancho Bernardo (San Diego County), CA

http://www.hodgee.com/history.html

Over the last century, there have been reports that a monster, very similar in description to the Loch Ness Monster, resides in Lake Hodges in San Diego. Pet name for this monster: HODGEE. This letterbox takes you to the location of a reported sighting many years ago. Perhaps you too will get a glimpse of this lovely monster.

To get to this secret location, go to the Piedra Pintadas Trail in the Lake Hodges area. Letterboxer katielu was kind enough to let me use her directions from “Kumeyaay Indian” letterbox clues. Her box is very close by, so be sure to check out her letterbox as well!

“From San Diego, go north on I-15 and exit Rancho Bernardo. Go west on Rancho Bernardo. Then north on Bernardo Drive and left on Duenda Road. Follow Duenda Road for ½ mile; it becomes Poblado. The trailhead is on your right, just before Moon Song Court. Park on the street here.

“Enter and follow the trail; stucco homes, once Indian teepees, are on your left. After about ½ mile, the trail becomes a clearing. To the right is a path; don’t take it. To the north is a group of boulders; remember these ‘ancient rocks.’

“Continue your path, straight ahead with the wooden fence on your right and hills to your left. You soon come to a fork in the path.”

At this fork, you want to continue on the path toward the boulders with some interpretive signs on them (go straight). Keep going along this path, passing (and reading) many of these interpretive signs along the way, getting closer and closer to Lake Hodges, home of Hodgee. Eventually you’ll come to another fork right before you reach the lake. There is a sign there that looks like this:

Do as the sign says and stay on the trail, and turn onto the right-hand fork, going up a hill.

You want to go up this hill so you can get a higher view of the lake. Hodgee is quite big so you need to be up high to see her in her entirety. As you go up the hill, you’ll notice that the trail begins to curve to your right as you pass a wooden “step.” Keep going, and eventually you’ll see a bunch of large boulders on your left. In this area, you will see a bunch of boulders on your left, about 10 feet in from the trail behind some shrubbery. The rocks are pictured below, and the arrow indicates where you can get a good look at Hodgee and capture her image in your logbook!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

NOTE: This is a foam stamp. These stamps require more ink than the traditional rubber stamp. Please ink liberally!!

Please let me know how this box is doing!!
