UPDATE: Box three went a.w.o.l. so we planted a new one in a slightly different location at the end of August 07. Hope this helps all who've enjoyed finding the first two but were frustrated by the missing third. The other boxes have been confirmed still present as of mid July 08.

Enjoy the walk - we can't wait to return.
- the ice cream capers.

Our first plant!

This letterbox has three parts. A single stamp is divided into three separate boxes located along the walk. To complete the stamp image, all three must be found. A diagram inside each stamping-up book describes the position of each stamp part relative to the whole image. (Hint: it’s best to completely read all of the clues before starting the hunt.)

Difficulty.
An easy walk along the bay beach with lots of interesting distractions and beautiful views. Total trip about 1.5 miles. Have fun and let us know when you’ve solved the caper or if any of the boxes have problems.

Accessibility.
This walk is best done around low tide. If parking at the Indian Neck Beach parking lot on-season between 8 and 5, you may be required to pay a daily fee or have a town parking sticker.

Driving Directions.
Begin at the Indian Neck Beach parking lot. To get to the parking lot from Route 6 turn east onto either Cove Road (from the north) or Pilgrim Spring Road (from the south). If you’re approaching from the south (Eastham), the left turn is just past the fire tower on the left side of Route 6. If you’re approaching from the north (Wellfleet), the right turn is just before Cove Point, a series of small retail shops in a single building on the right side of Route 6. Follow either road. When these two roads intersect, the road which continues west is Indian Neck Road. Follow this road until it ends at the parking lot.

Clues.
Box 1.
From the lot, a trail in the south-western corner heads over the dunes to the beach.
Head south along the beach, past sandy cliffs and between stairs and shores.
When you see the oyster farmers, and their trucks, you’re getting close.
Before you cross the tidal stream, a little cottage is tucked in tight.
Pass its stairs to the sand, turn east, stop at the corner of the wooden bulkhead.
From this spot, take a bearing of 150 degrees and walk to the corner on this line.
From this spot, take a bearing of 30 degrees for a sterling seat.
From here, three poles and sixteen paces east take you to the end of the line.
Box 1 is at its base in the shrubs and under a rock.
(Inside Box 1 is an essential clue to finding Box 2.)

Box 2.
From Box 1, head north, returning from whence you came.
Spot the mermaid ships prow high atop a wooden flight.
Pass by several concrete zig zags, maybe three.
After a wooden wall, one last zig zag turns to stone and then there’s none.
A flagpole is nearby.
Turn east and pass through the gap.
Cross the road to find the spot hinted at in Box 1.
By the sign naming this place lays a log
And next to it lies Box 2.
(Inside Box 2 is an essential clue to finding Box 3.)

Box 3.
Head west to the beach.
Continue north.
Pass a rocky stair.
Pass the rocky point aimed at Great Island to the west.
Head to the end and around the bend.
Walk the line to the place
Where Box 2 said you could rest.
Aim your compass 30 degrees,
Across the water, blue awnings may be out,
Mac’s feeds the Marina.
Walk the line to the first big stone.
Atop this stone, turn to 120 degrees.
Walk nearly to the end in this direction.
To your right spot the tree trunk up in the grass.
Beneath one end, in the sand, at your feet
Lies the final treat!

Now the real thing waits for you
At Mac’s and its awnings blue.

(Please be sure this box is well anchored when replanted.)
