Epworth Lake Park Letterbox
Founded in 1897, by the Methodist Nebraska Conference, Epworth Lake Park was a site of an annual Chautauqua or summer camp.
The amphitheater seated more than 3000 people and by 1910, thousands of visitors came from all over the Midwest to see vaudeville style acts and to listen to some of the most famous speakers of the time, including Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln’s own William Jennings Bryan.
The park was nearly totally destroyed in 1935 by torrential rains that fell in Lancaster County. The land was later sold. Years later it was donated to the city and is now part of Wilderness Park.
The stamp is what many of the people who visited the park brought with them so many years ago.
Clues:
In southwest Lincoln, South side of S.1st and Calvert Streets. Park in the parking lot. Start under the Epworth Lake Park arch. Walk south down the path 88 paces. To the right is a fallen tree. On the other side, under some bark you will find the box.
