Cape Cod Rail Trail – Brewster Bike

This Letterbox is at our favorite bike shop in Brewster – Brewster Bike. You can nab this box from the parking lot if you desire, but we suggest that while you’re here you might as well ride (Brewster bike has all the gear) or walk (about a mile and a half round trip). Brewster Bike is at 442 Underpass Road.

Start at the parking lot to the Rail Trail at the intersection of Rt. 137 and Underpass Road. Head East towards Underpass Road on the Rail Trail. At about 2/10 of a mile look for a trail to your right that leads up a steep bank (about 5 feet high). Two-thirds of the way up this bank you will see the Brewster Bike sign (to the left of the branch trail). You’ve gone too far if you cross Underpass Road.

Ride up the incline and park your bike at the top (you should be about 20 feet off the Rail Trail). Return to the Brewster Bike sign that you just rode past. Standing with the sign at your left shoulder, your body parallel with the two sign posts and your back to the Rail Trail, sight straight ahead. You will see a large rock (the size of a kitchen stove for lack of a better reference) dead ahead. Walk 49 paces to the rock. At the base of this rock on the side opposite the parking lot hidden behind some small concealing rocks you will find the Letterbox. Tip – The rock is near the basketball hoop.

Enjoy the contents and re-hide well. Stop in and say ‘hi’ to the owners if you like. Note - this box is planted with permission, but is not maintained by the owners of the bike shop. If you ask them to help you locate it they’ve been instructed to give you a blank stare and reply “What’s a Letterbox?.

So you made it to Brewster Bike, you found the letterbox, now how about turning this adventure into a “real” bike ride? My suggestion would be to get back on the Rail Trail going in the direction you came. Go past the parking lot on Rt. 137 and keep going. After about 2.5 miles level pedaling (OK, there’s a slight incline but its hardly noticeable) you’ll cross the end of Long Lake and Pleasant Lake. Stop to take in the views. Continue on to the Pleasant Lake country store. Reward your efforts with an ice-cream.

Interested in more letterboxing? At the time of this writing, there are at least two boxes within a quarter mile of your present location (search for “Pleasant Lake” and “Frogs” within 25 miles of Brewster).
