This is a brisk 20 minute walk on level road. The road has some huge potholes that keep you from driving back to the box.

On the sides of the road are parts of a former strip mining operation that has now been reclaimed. The water you hear is coming from the old mine site. Sometimes beaver will build dams across the ditches on the side of the road.

This trip will take you to the kilns where charcoal was made from the coal and shipped by rail to steel mills in the Ohio River Valley.

Turn off State Rte. 32 onto Douglas Rd., just south of Thomas. Go past the Mountain Made Store (be sure to stop in at some point during your quest), down the hill past the houses where miners used to live, and across the Blackwater River Bridge. Pull over and park immediately after the bridge on the right hand side of the road, but please don't block the bike trail. Cross over the road to the lefthand side which heads south - away from State Rte. 32. Follow the gravel road (the bed of an old railroad)for about 15 minutes. Start to notice the numbers on the utility poles on the lefthand side of the road. At the old concrete bridge support(with an arch at the bottom) on the left side of the road, start counting the telephone poles. The 7th telephone pole has the #67 on it with a preservation sign attached. Turn left onto the small trail towards the kilns' remains. You can see here the mounds are made of red bricks. Look at the rectangle opening below the middle of the 3 beehive shaped kilns. Under the flat rock you will find the letterbox.

Be sure to treat yourself at the Purple Fiddle Restaurant in Thomas - it has a neat atmosphere & great food, ice cream & coffee!
