Are you looking for a nice roadtrip and a short hike through the woods? Perhaps you would enjoy another beautiful view of Lake Erie? You've come to the right letterbox.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:Easy.

KID FRIENDY:Yes.

FACILITIES NEARBY:Yes (Seasonal).

HISTORY:During the 19th Century many summer resorts, camps and picnic areas began to develop along the lakefront including the area you will soon be visiting. Drawn by the lure of Lake Erie, many people originally visited this area via trolly from Erie beginning in 1903. Successful businesses, such as the local candy shop you will be passing, still rely heavily on the tourism industry. Their continued success is a testament to the historic and present day value of tourism in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

DIRECTIONS:
The Letterbox is located just west of the Village of North Springfield along the cliffs of Spectacular Lake Erie.

From the City of Erie:

Take West 12th Street (Route 5) WEST beyond city limits and into Millcreek Township. *** SET YOUR ODOMETER *** at the intersection with Peninsula Drive (Route 832). Follow Route 5 past the airport, past the west suburbs. When you start seeing orchards and extensive corn fields you are getting closer. WHEN YOUR ODOMETER READS 16.5 MILES, Turn RIGHT to the Village of North Springfield.

Go up and over the railroad tracks, immediately TURN LEFT at the candy shop (stop in if it's open). !!!*** SET YOUR ODOMETER AGAIN AT THE CANDY SHOP ***!!! after another 2.5 miles SLOW DOWN... then SLOW WAAAAYYYY DOWN.

On the LAKE side of the road you will see 2 white posts and a squat square rock marking a trailhead. PARK HERE AT THE TRAILHEAD IF POSSIBLE (If you see a gravel parking lot you have gone too far). Follow the short trail up the small hill. 130 paces later you will see Lake Erie open up to her majestic beauty to your right and a fallen log to your left. Soak in the view; if it is Summer imagine what the spot looks like in the Winter, if it's Winter, imagine the opposite. 4 seasons, and 1 life to live, time is our treasure, don't squander it in a windowless office! The treasure you seek today is hidden at the root of the aforementioned fallen log.

If you continue a few steps on the path you came in on you will see it progresses down a steep hill into other parking areas. If you would like to try your hand at finding beach glass or other Lake Erie treasures I recommend backtracking to your car and driving the very short distance to these parking areas, facilities are available during the summer tourist season here.

From Ohio:

Follow Route 20 EAST and *** SET YOUR ODOMETER*** at the "Welcome to Pennsylvania" sign. Proceed 1.3 miles, then turn LEFT onto Route 5 ***UNTIL YOUR ODOMETER REACHES 6 MILES***, then turn LEFT toward the Village of North Springfield. Turn LEFT again at the candy shop and follow instructions from above.

Happy Hunting!
