The Manasquan Reservoir is both a water source for towns and utilities and a natural setting for recreation and outdoor pursuits. The 770-acre reservoir is part of a larger 1,200-acre site that includes woods and wetlands for hiking, boating, cycling, and fishing. The reservoir has a 4 billion gallon water capacity and maximum 40’ depth. The Visitor Center is the site of all boating activities and features a boat rental area, bait shop, vending machines, and a fireplace. You can enjoy spectacular views from the second level observation deck.

Clues: Easy
Terrain: Easy
Time: 3-4 hours if you stop to enjoy things along the way
Distance: 5 miles

Find your way to the main entrance to the park on Windeler Rd. in Howell Township. Proceed to the trail head located adjacent to the boat ramp parking lot. You will be hiking the trail in the reverse order from this point…..counter clockwise. After a while you will pass over a wooden bridge. Bear to the left at a main intersection in the path. Cross a paved road and continue through a trail gate. After about 20 min. of casual walking you will notice a red sign on your left “Keep out restricted area.” Continue along the trail until you come to a park bench on the right (located shortly after the four mile marker). No you haven’t walked four miles already…..remember you are doing the trail in reverse order. You have four miles to go. Stand behind the bench and take a compass reading of 120 degrees. Walk towards the road that you can see a short distance away through the woods. One of the oaks on this compass setting will hold your first find in this 3-box series. Congratulations on your sweet find.

Continue on the trail and cross over another wooden bridge. You will pass a high split rail fence on your left. Look beyond the split rail and you will see a chain link fence guarding the reservoir pumping station. Follow the split rail along the path up the hill and at the end you will get a nice view of the reservoir. Eventually you will come to the mile marker post for 3 mi. on your left. You have 3 mi. to go. Continue on the path and pass a clearing area free of trees on both sides of the trail. Keep going. The trail now runs close to the water. You will come to a park bench on your left. Directly across from this bench you will notice a sign for a Wildlife Observation Blind with a short path leading to a small wooden shelter. Follow this path towards the shelter. You might want to take some time watching and waiting for wildlife. The structure will provide cover and make you less visible to wildlife. When you are ready to proceed with your search, take a 250 degree heading from a seated position within the shelter. Locate a clump of four silver beauties and you can toast your second find for the day.

Return to the main path and continue on in the same direction. You will walk for some distance and eventually come to a mile marker for 2 mi. which is your remaining distance for this challenge. The path turns left and becomes a causeway crossing the water. Follow the causeway. You will come to a parking lot of your left. The path continues straight ahead. Eventually the path will turn left into the woods. You will come to another parking lot for the Environmental Center. If the center is open, stop and explore. When you’re ready, go back to the point where you approached the parking lot from the woods. You will notice that you have a choice between a trail leading to the left and one leading to the right. Take the left path following the sign for Overflow Parking Area. The trail will fork, stay to the right and pass through a split rail fence. Continue on through the opening in the fence until the end and turn left at the park bench. You will pass through some areas where you have water on both sides of the trail. Stay on the main trail. You will come to a wooden bridge. Look across the reservoir and you can see the pumping station that you passed much earlier. You have come a long way. Continue on to a park bench on your right and take a short break……you deserve it. Continue on and pass over a wooden bridge just after a fork in the trail. Take 15 paces after you come off the bridge and look for the “Medusa” on your right. Don’t worry, you won’t turn to stone. She is holding your third treat for the day. Congratulations.

Continue on the trail back towards the main parking lot. You have about 15 min. of casual walking. By the time you are back, you may have a desire for a “real” sweet treat. If so, follow the directions below and you won’t be disappointed:

Directions:

Proceed towards the park exit and turn right onto Windeler Rd. Take Windeler Rd. to the stop sign and turn left onto Georgia Tavern Rd. At the light turn right onto Rt. 9 North. Take the u- turn after the second light (U-Haul dealer on right before the light). Proceed 4/10 of a mile on Rt. 9 South and turn into Ice Cream on 9 for your treat. Feel free to ask for samples before making your selection. Bon appetit!
