For a new point of view, head toward Port Orford on Hwy 101. In Port Orford, look for the state park sign directing you to Port Orford Heads. If you're going south, you will turn right toward Port Orford Heads, If you're going north, you will turn left. Follow the signs to Port Orford Heads parking lot (approx. 1 mile).

"You have to go out... you don't have to come back." Who said this and why? What happened at Nellie's cove? Visit the museum and find out (Museum is open April 1 - October 31, Thursday-Monday, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.). On the way to the museum, see the "unsinkable" ocean-going craft on display under the shelter.

While you are in the museum, see if you can answer these questions:
Did the Japanese actually invade the Oregon Coast during WW II? What did they attempt to do, and were they successful? (see the models on display)
Have you ever seen a gun that when shot at people can save their lives? There is one in this museum. What is the name of this gun, and what was it used for? How did it work?

While you are at the museum, pick up a map of the trails. Walk first to the view point of Nellie's Cove and find out how many stairs led down to it from the heads.

Continue on to the historic location of a lookout tower. What was this tower used for? How high was it? How far could one see from it?

Toward a new point of view, take the trail on the left (not the one you just walked), staying to the left whenever the trail splits, until you get to where the trail stops at the view point (you don't have to go past the fence). On a clear day, you can see the Cape Blanco lighthouse. How many seconds are there between light flashes? This is the "signature" of the lighthouse. Take that same number of small steps back the way you came. What is the "Rush" here? Stop and sit a spell. Sitting there, you might even want to stretch your arms a little... And depending on where you are sitting, the box could be within an arms length. Good luck... We hope you enjoyed the views and the walk.

Look for whales and other marine life from this view point. They are often seen here. We saw whales, spouting and showing their backs and tails, in the ocean between the point and the cone shaped rock island when we visited this spot in September 2006. We also saw seals on the rocks below.

*NOTE: July 2007 we received two notes from two different parties that the box may be missing. When we get out to this part of the coast again (in Sept./Oct.?), we will check out the reports and replace the box if it is missing.
