Driving Directions:

Take I-77 to the Rockside Road/Seven Hills/Independence exit.
Go South – Southeast, following the brown Metropark signs. Stay on Rockside Road for a mile. Turn right onto Canal Road. Turn right into the Canal Visitor Center parking.

About this letterbox:

The Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation stretches through the villages of Cuyahoga Heights and Valley View. The reservation follows a portion of its namesake, the historic 309-mile Ohio and Erie Canal. Together with the Cuyahoga River, the northernmost remaining 4.4 miles of watered canal provides wildlife management areas, fishing opportunities and scenic beauty. Picnicking, hiking trails, a 7.2-mile all purpose trail, and unique natural and cultural heritage interpretive graphics are also features of the reservation.

Observation decks and viewing areas provide exciting opportunities to see and hear red-tailed hawks, great blue heron, beavers, deer, orioles, yellow warblers, and other wildlife that abound in the bottomland forest. Rich in history, the 110-mile Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor extends between Cleveland and Dover.

Clues:

1. Take the path to the right of Hell’s Half Acre (the name of the Visitor Center’s building; quaint) proceeding south towards Alexander Mill on the towpath. The canal will be on your left.

2. Stop at the tree with a hole through the base. Pretty neat! Stand on the south side, go 250° to the second tree directly behind the holy tree. Box #1 is behind it! Please recover the box really well. I recommend back-tracking to that concrete bench you just passed to stamp in.

3. Continue down the path heading towards the bridge spanning the canal on the left. At the bridge turn right and head down the road less traveled. You will continue all the way to the end of this path (tricky during the summer months, but can be done) to the metal fence and concrete barricade. After admiring the view of the Cuyahoga River, turn left and walk to the end of the metal rail. Box #2 is hiding between the leftest (yeah, I made that up) metal post and the concrete wall. Make sure it won't fall out to the left when you replace.

We're going to switch up the order here, because Box #2 has been replanted (12/14/2006).

4. As you back track watch on your right for a fallen tree behind the old cable fence. Between the branches in the nook is Box #4 under some sticks. (If someone would be so kind as to give me a pace count from Box #2, to this box I'd be appreciative.) If the above is too vague proceed from Box #2 back down the path towards the main path. When you see the grassy path leading off to the left, stop and turn around. Step over the fallen tree. Go 34 single-stepped paces. There will be an old cable fence on both sides. On your left side under the fence is a fallen tree. Between the branches in the nook is Box #4 under some sticks.

5. Walking towards the main path you will see a grassy path on your left. Continue straight up the grassy path through a field into the woods. You will see two stumps in front of you across the field; head towards these. You will have to step over some downed trees right before entering the woods. If it's muddy, you can go to the right and around.

6. Once in the woods you will see two sets of multi-limbed trees. Trees will be on the right if you stepped over the trees, or on your left if you took the non-muddy route. Box #3 is in the middle of the second cluster.

7. Return the way you came! Thanks for rehiding the boxes well for future letterboxers.
