Bird’s Eye View of Bristol Vermont

A Bird’s Eye View of Bristol can be had by climbing 1.0 mile up to Bristol Ledges, on the southwest side of Hogback Mountain. These ledges are also known as “Deer Leap;” not to be confused with Deer Leap Trail, Deer Leap Mountain, or Bristol Cliffs. Planted by Swampman, Green Haven, and Morgun.

Driving Directions:
Bristol, Vermont, Main Street (VT 116), turn North onto Mountain Street, then turn right onto Mountain Terrace. Bear right & continue to the gate at the end of the street. Parking is forbidden here (and the neighbors are quick to call the police if they think you are parking). After the hikers are dropped off, the car will need to be parked on Mountain Street or just west in the shopping district.

Several other trails converge on these fine cliffs, but I have never looked for the trailheads; be careful not to descend via the wrong trail. I was told that one trail starts across the road from Prayer Rock, which also sports a letterbox. My topographical map shows the reservoir almost directly above Prayer Rock. One other trail to Bird’s Eye View may be reached from behind a restaurant on the North side of VT 116. Any information on these trails would be appreciated.

The view west from these ledges is spectacular. The entire village of Bristol and the lower Champlain Valley are at your feet. On a clear day, Lake Champlain is visible as are some of the high peaks of the Adirondacks. When I hike this trail I hear my pulse thundering between my ears; be sure your heart is in tip-top condition before attempting this one-mile hike.

Clues:
Start your hike at the gate. Hike up the gravel road until you are above the reservoir. Leave the road on the obvious trail, continue up, keeping to the West, and ignore the side trails. The trail ends at the main ledges. Be sure to take a long break, enjoying the view. You have earned it!

Walk to the end of the ledges and find a large boulder supported by about three smaller boulders, making a tiny sheltered area. Go to the East side of this boulder and continue east about 10 yards to a dead tree. Your prize is concealed inside the SW side of the tree about 5 feet off the ground. This 35mm-film-canister-letterbox is provided as a Bonus for people who already want to do this fine hike. Please re-hide it out of view.
