Smokejumpers are specialized wildland fire fighters who parachute out of airplanes into remote forest fires. This base near the Missoula airport is the largest smokejumper center in the country. All ages will enjoy the free tours available from Memorial Day to Labor Day on the hour. To reach the center take the Airway Blvd exit off I-90 on the west side of Missoula. Follow the Smokejumper signs to the center 1/4 mile west of the airport.
The letterbox is available year round. Walk east of the visitor center beyond the firefighter memorial to the Hornet Peak lookout. This mini-box actually a tape covered pill container is hidden behind a foundation rock at the northwest corner.
