From Route 108 in Newmarket, take Bay Road and you will see the signs for Heron Point Sanctuary on the right. Turns into a trailer park and the entrance is up on the right marked by another sign. Follow this dirt drive to the parking lot. Start out in the dirt parking lot. After the welcome signs, walk towards the water. This is the Lamprey River. Before you reach the wooden deck, follow the dirt path left, passing a large rock and a rotting tree stump shortly on the right. When you see the Heron Point Sanctuary sign the trail forks, go left, away from the wooden decking. The trail will be very rocky and uphill, so watch out! Stay on this trail for some minutes. You will see a group of birch saplings on your right. When the trail makes a T, turn right. Follow this trail for some minutes. Take the next trail going to the right. You will pass between two large pine trees. Stay on this trail until it ends at a clearing and you see the river again. Look across the river at this point and you will see a large red brick building. Facing the brick building across the water, turn 90 degrees to the trail on the right. Follow this trail until you see an extremely large boulder formation on your right in the woods. Go off the trail now, towards it. See the small cave towards the bottom of the boulder? DO NOT GO INSIDE THE CAVE. Walk around the boulder to the left until you see (or bump into) a pine tree in the way. Behind it, you'll find what you seek! Conceal the letterbox well when you're finished.
To return to the parking lot, you can double back the way you came or continue on the last trail you were on until you see the wooden decking again.
