|Placed Date||Oct 1 2006|
Difficulty: 1 you drive than walk on an unpaved trail
This letterbox is located at in the Watchung Reservation at the Watchung Stables. You can find the Stables off 22 onto New Providence Road, up the hill, following the signs to the Stables, onto the circle, a bit around to the right and the first turnoff is Summit Lane. Take Summit Lane till the first left turn driveway, that is the entrance to the Watchung Stables. Follow the driveway down past the main building throught the first parking lot and up to the second, park here.
Take a look around at the beautiful setting. The big horse stable and the riding rings. If it is lesson time you can watch the troops getting English riding lessons from their instructors. You might even see a Fighting Irish rider. Enter the trail where it says cars may not enter. You start by the main ring and proceed walking with the woods on your left and the rings on your right on the bridle trail. As you come by the second ring (its actually the third, the first is hidden up by the first parking lot) you will see a sign on the fence of the second ring which states "bridle trail". Directly across from this sign is a large tree,with branches hanging over the trail. It has lost a large main branch which has fallen at its feet. Head through the long grass to the base of this tree. Watch out for chipmunks. You can find the Mustang Mountain letterbox at the base of this tree, under branches right after the fallen branch. Replace the letterbox as you found it.Enjoy your time at Watchung Stables!
