Terrain: foot trails
Distance of walk: 1mi rt
Elevation: ~500’
Wheel chair friendly: no
Pen colors: gray, tan, dark green, light green, light blue, dr. blue, black, orange.
Introduction:
Mt. Howard is a 8300’ peak with great views in all directions. The tramway was the longest in North America when it was built. It lifts you 3700’ in about 15 mins. It costs $24/person as of 6/27/09 to get to the top so plan to make a day of it, enjoying to views and the hikes. Bring your own lunch or buy a burger from Summit Grill.
Getting you close:
Drive to Joseph in NE Oregon. At the South end of Wallowa Lake look for the Tramway to the top of Mt. Howard.
The Box:
Going CCW to the Valley Overlook take notice of the crater like depression to the right of the trail. Count 50 yrds down the trail to a very tight grouping of trees crowding the trail on the left. Look under the boughs and rocks on the West side of this tree.
Please re-hide well, scatter some natural ground debris over the hiding spot.
Hope you enjoyed the hunt. Since we don’t live in the area we can’t check on this box very often. We appreciate an update on the boxes condition. Thank you.
