Chocolate & Midnight
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: moderate w/rocks
Distance: .5 miles
Elevation: 130 feet
Location: Flat rock Wildlife Sanctuary
Directions:
Take Rt. 2 to exit 28 (Rt. 31 north). Follow Rt. 31 north to the stop sign (intersection of Rt. 31 and Rt. 2A). Follow Rt. 31 north/Rt. 2A east 1.1 miles to another stop sign. Bear right onto Rt. 31 north/Rt. 2A east/Rt. 12 north towards Fitchburg Center. Follow that .4 miles and bear left up the hill (this is Wallace Rd.) Follow Wallace Road for .4 miles take a left onto West Street. Take the third left onto Ashburnham Hill Road. The sanctuary is 1 mile ahead on the right hand side at the Mass Audubon sign.
Say hello, but don’t disturb the “chocolate” bunny we saw twice on our travels…As my son’s love for all animals is unyielding, of course we had two bunnies once that lived in a pen in our yard. Their favorite thing to do was to burrow under the rocks and hide in the shade! Hurry please to find me, as we multiply quickly.
To find Chocolate:
Link trail (follow fence right, away from sign board)
Follow Blue Circles
Take right at fork (a left here will take you to MA Blue bird box)
Cross Over ?Dry? Riverbed
Count 7 strides
Between a rock and a hard place
Two trunked Oak tree on left says your in the right spot!
To find Midnight:
**Found waterlogged, removed for maintenance!**
Continue on the path counting blue plastic circle trail marks,
Through a rock garden (they would have loved it here!),
Look left at the fourth marked tree,
What do you see?
A perfect resting spot for me!
Follow the Yellow trail markers back.
