Manasquan Reservoir is in southeastern Monmouth County and is a terrific place to hike, bike, fish or just be outside. For directions and info about the park go to:

Begin at the Visitors Center located off Windeler Road. Near the Visitors Centers, find the plaque honoring Joseph Irwin located where 2 ramps diverge. Facing the plaque, look over your left shoulder & see a concrete path receding away from you. Take that path & look for 2 large blue fish. What? You want to stop & play? I don’t think so, keep moving! Did you come to a lot? If so, good, bear right & follow the lot perimeter. Nice view of the lake, huh?

After a couple hundred yards, you’ll discover the “…Entrance”. Once you’re a few steps in, it’s time to make a choice. A good choice would be west.

This trail encircles the entire lake and is maintained as well as you see at this point, which is fantastic. Your stroll is a little shorter. Enjoy a brief saunter while you look for a place where only employees dare tread. From this point count off 15-20 steps then choose the path less traveled.

Take this Cul-de-Sac to its natural conclusion. Wow, another Kodak moment. Turn your back to the view and, hanging your toes off the deck, find a trail at 2:00.

(WARNING, BE CAREFUL HERE. THIS TRAIL IS SHORT BUT THERE’S A STEEP LEDGE ON THE RIGHT. DON’T LET CHILDREN LEAD THE WAY)

Once under the leaning tree, take 4 or 5 steps and seek a thin path towards the laurels. When found, pace off 15 to 20 steps & STOP. Are there a couple downed logs laying ahead of you? (uh, the “not downed” logs are called “trees”, by the way) Look down the length of the largest log and spy several trees. Behind the largest tree is your prize, buried in the forest litter.
