10/20/07 I have received a second e-mail that the seaons box is gone

To celebrate being engaged eleven years ago and to celebrate being married to my wife for ten years we decided to go where we got engaged, Mt Equinox. So these boxes were placed 11 years to the day after she allowed herself to suck in some oxygen and say “yes!”. Afterwards we had lunch at the inn, which is sadly empty now. It will cost 8 dollars per car and 2 more for each adult beyond the driver. Kids under 12 free. I normally hate the idea of paying to get into a park, but this is private land (isn’t it nice to own your own mountain!) owned by the Carthusian Monks. Besides, the view is amazing! The monks have their own place over the mountain. You can see it at one of the overlooks on the drive up. Oh yeah, make sure the car is in good order for the sled ride down!

Sky line Drive to top. Unless you have a lot of a day to hike from the bottom.

Mt Equinox Anniversary Box

Box can be found by the whole family, though final part is a trail down a hill. Ten to fifteen minutes to find.

From parking lot go to the south western corner where there is a maintenance road. Take it. After a couple of minutes there is a right hand trail. Keep going, if you like towers. The road will empty out into a courtyard full of communication technology. Go through to other set of gates on far side. (if all of this is closed go back to that first right you passed, there was a tree across that trail, but you can get around it). From (2nd) gate take about 25 step straight out. On left should be an entrance on the left into a pine grove. From the start of the grove take a about 120 steps down the trail (it might be a good idea to see if you have a shorter or longer stride then I). Now you should be standing next to a shack and a pole. Step 50 more times. Next to the trail under rocks, to the right, will be the box. Please hide carefully, this trail is maintained and humans will see it if exposed. When finished go back to the parking lot, take some pictures.

Hand Carved

From the parking lot go north east around the old inn.

(The story I got was that a young couple had rented the inn from the monks, but that the wife died and the husband could not run it himself. Inside I can still see the tables at which I had lunch 11 years ago. The monks are trying to see what they want to do with the building/property.)

The Seasons Box

Take the Overlook Trail (it starts on the complete opposite side of the inn from the parking lot). I cannot tell you exactly how long the hike is (longer then above), but an estimation is about .4 of a mile. E-mail me if you think you have a better estimation. My 7 year olds made this trip down and back with no problem, but the family ahead of us did leave their baby carriage at the top close to the radio tower. Also, boots might be in order. A little mud and a few rocks on the trail made my kids day (I actually mean it!). Pass the tomb stone dedicated to a dog. Stay on the Overlook Trail. At the overlook take some pictures. When the coast is clear go 26 steps down the trail from the stone bench. On the left of the trail, under a rock, before an uprooted set of trees, is the Seasons Letterbox. It is not in the best box in the world, it’s a non hand carved stamp, the stamp pad may be beyond peak, but I liked the spot and tried to put this together in 2 minutes. Please make sure the log book is in the bag, I have no idea how long the box is going to last.

There is a geocache on this side of the mountain.
